2024 grant to support equality between women and men and equal opportunities
From May to December 2024, we are implementing a project supported by a 2024 grant from the Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Family of the Slovak Republic to support equality between women and men and equal opportunities. Within the project, our main goal is to ensure the availability of comprehensive support services for women and their children who are at risk of or experiencing domestic and gender-based violence, by securing the sustainability and development of the services of the ALEJ Counseling Center. We will provide women and their children with crisis intervention, basic and specialized social counseling, psychological counseling, legal counseling and assistance, and supportive therapies aimed at mitigating the impacts of the violence they have experienced and preventing further victimization.
To prevent violence, we will raise awareness about violence against women and children, as well as about the services we provide, by publishing expert posts on the organization’s social media and website. Our goal is to empower women and give them the opportunity to obtain information, reflect on the violence they are experiencing, find answers to their questions and learn that a situation of violence can be resolved.
The primary target group of the activities are women and their children who are at risk of or experiencing violence, including partner violence, post-separation violence, sexual violence and harassment, stalking and cyberstalking, and other forms of domestic and gender-based violence. Our goal is to provide support to women experiencing violence and their children and to ensure the greatest possible availability of comprehensive services throughout the entire process of resolving their situation. We will provide help, support and counseling to at least 80 women.
The place of project implementation is the Bratislava region. Period of project implementation: 1 May 2024 – 31 December 2024. The project is funded by a grant under § 9a and § 12 (para. 3) of Act No. 544/2010 Coll. on subsidies within the competence of the Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Family of the Slovak Republic, as amended, which supported the project with EUR 99,800.
2024 grant for the provision of professional assistance to victims of crime
From May to December 2024, we are implementing a project supported by a 2024 grant for the provision of professional assistance to victims of crime under Act No. 274/2017 Coll. on Victims of Crime and on amendments to certain acts (the “Act No. 274/2017 Z. z. “) – č. DOTČ08/2024/13.
As an entity accredited by the Ministry of Justice of the Slovak Republic to provide assistance to victims of crime in the form of specialized professional assistance to particularly vulnerable victims under § 5 (para. 4) of the Victims Act, we provide assistance to victims of crime, especially violence against women and in intimate relationships. We provide women and their children with help, counseling, access to justice and advocacy for their rights. We also focus on help with post-separation violence, dangerous threats, stalking, cyberstalking and sexual violence. Our goal is to eliminate violence and achieve safety and justice. Within the project, we provide social counseling and psychological help. We provide legal counseling, assistance and representation of victims of crime from resources outside the project supported by the Ministry of Justice of the Slovak Republic.
The place of project implementation is the Bratislava region. Period of project implementation: 1 May 2024 – 31 December 2024. The project is funded by a grant for the provision of professional assistance to victims of crime under Act No. 274/2017 Coll. on Victims of Crime and on amendments to certain acts (the “Act No. 274/2017 Z. z. “) – č. DOTČ08/2024/13 by the Ministry of Justice in the amount of EUR 40,000.
EMPOWERING WOMEN - PREVENTING VIOLENCE AND MITIGATING ITS IMPACTS
The project addresses the human rights issue of violence against women. Its main goal is to respond to the lack of preventive activities and thus prevent the victimization and further discrimination of women and girls. It focuses on raising awareness of stalking and cyberstalking as specific forms of violence, with an emphasis on their various manifestations and impacts, as well as on safety and technology safety.
The result of the activity will be increased awareness among young people, who will know how to prevent stalking and cyberstalking, how to recognize them and how to defend themselves in a situation of stalking or cyberstalking. Students will be able to use this information for themselves or share it with their peers. Peers are the people young people most often confide in when they experience violence.
The place of project implementation is the Bratislava region.
Period of project implementation: 1 March 2023 – 31 December 2023
The project is funded by a grant for the promotion, support and protection of human rights and freedoms and for the prevention of all forms of discrimination, racism, xenophobia, antisemitism and other manifestations of intolerance, provided by the Ministry of Justice of the Slovak Republic in the amount of EUR 7,000.

EXPANSION OF COUNSELING AND SUPPORT SERVICES FOR WOMEN EXPERIENCING VIOLENCE AND THEIR CHILDREN
To prevent all forms of violence against women and their children, the project focuses specifically on sexual violence in the context of using technology.
The primary target groups for our project are women and children experiencing violence – including sexual violence, partner abuse, and cyberstalking.
The result of the project is increased capacity and maximized accessibility of specialized services in counseling centers for women experiencing violence in relationships and their children.

2024 The project „Spolu s nami – Rozšírenie poradenských a podporných služieb pre ženy zažívajúce násilie a ich deti” received a grant in the amount 499 702 € from Norway. The project is co-financed in the amount of € 89,946 from the state budget of the Slovak Republic. Our goal for this project is to increase the capacity of services for women experiencing partner abuse and their children and to increase accessibility by adding new services.
WOMEN TO WOMEN
COMPLEX AND INNOVATIVE SERVICES FOR WOMEN EXPERIENCING VIOLENCE IN RELATIONSHIPS
The project focuses on solving the issue of violence in relationships and violence against women, including sexual and post-separation abuse. The target group is women experiencing violence and being threatened by violence in close relationships and their children.
Our goal is to eliminate violence and create safety, overcome isolation, decrease the impacts of violence, strengthen the autonomy and integrity of women, and achieve justice for a vulnerable group of women and children. The results of implementing activities will be a higher number of identified cases of violence and a higher amount of women and children, which will be provided with quality help and support within an area and length that will fit their needs.

Part of the agenda of our counseling center is that we are cooperating with different organizations and institutions, sharing in the creation of policies, as well as raising awareness in the community about problems of violence in relationships and violence against women. Our final goal is to contribute to social change through close cooperation with other organizations and institutions, working in the community and within multi-institutional cooperation. We try to solve problems by contributing to exchange experiences with other organizations and thorough application of each starting point and basic principles.

VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM
Slovakia belongs to countries in which the frequent phenomenon is violence against women. Almost every other woman experienced some form of physical violence, and 23% of women in Slovakia experienced physical or sexual abuse by their partner throughout their adult life (Pan-European research of violence against women realized by the ‘FRA’ – European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights in the year 2014).
From other statistics, we know that in the year 2018 there were a total of 840 identified acts of violence against women by their partners, and another 704 in the year 2019. In the years 2010 – 2019, 285 women were murdered, of which 61 women were killed by their husbands or partners. In the year 2020, 12 women were murdered by their partners or husbands, which is the highest number in the last 10 years.
In many cases, it is always about a combination of different forms of violence, which may not be visible at first glance. This issue is deepened even more by the pandemic. Nowadays, we spend more time at home than ever before, and this triggers another wave of violence and causes trauma to the victims.
We know that one of the most vulnerable groups is women. Violence against women undermines their fundamental rights, their dignity, or access to care. The equality index of women and men is lower in our country than in most countries in the European Union. The problem of violence against women is closely related to this.
By the year 2022, as part of their support, IKEA wants to raise awareness about violence that women experience in their households and also to reduce its acceptance rate in society, thus, ensuring a safe home for most people. IKEA committed themselves to financially support non-profit organizations which help the victims of domestic violence, so they can provide the needed help and accommodation. They will also support education and accept any specific solutions or measures that will secure access to exact and adequate security, help, and support for women experiencing violence in relationships so that their current situation doesn’t get worse.
ADVOCATES AGAINST VIOLENCE
The project is a reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic when there was a high number of detected cases of violence against women and children and partner violence. In the situation of a global pandemic, the Slovak Bar Association decided to start a project to help vulnerable people, which are the target of different forms of violence. Psychologists, helplines, women’s non-governmental organizations, and others report that during the pandemic, domestic violence increased by at least 30 – 40%. The result of surveys among advocates in both waves of COVID-19 was an increased demand for solving family law matters, as well as information about a higher number of cases of domestic violence during quarantine, at a time of greater degree of isolation during measures and the overall uncertainty of people, springing during the pandemic situation.
Regardless of its form, violence is a societal problem that requires a solution from several sides. Legal and psychological assistance, as well as help and support for non-profit organizations, they have an irreplaceable spot in solving the issue of violence. At a time when many institutions don’t work or are hard to find, facilitating access to legal aid can be a lifeline in a difficult situation. The goal of the project is that the applicants will get comprehensive and qualified information, counseling, and services when solving their situation legally, but also psychologically, and practically.

NEW SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE
We are participating in a 4-year research project called “Strategies of women on preventing, reducing and stopping violence in close relationships”, which is implemented by Budúcnosť, a non-profit organization. In cooperation with six women’s organizations, which provide assistance and support for women experiencing partner violence and their children, we examine women’s responses to violence. Specifically, we examine processes of change in women as part of solving the problem of violence and ending an abusive relationship.
The results of this unique research in Slovakia based on the experiences of women themselves will be published in the year 2022. The outcomes and knowledge will be consequently transferred to our practice.
NEW KNOWLEDGE
We consider education and raising awareness about violence against women, children, and partner violence as an important part of our activities. Our goal is to get all professions and individuals who are involved in solving the issue of violence the proper education that enables them to understand the essence of the problem of violence against women and children and to be helpful, professional, and emphatic in their approach and to make their help and support effective.
The education we provide can take the form of either training, seminar, or workshop. We base our education on our many years of experience, the latest scientific knowledge, and foreign practices of other organizations working with women and children experiencing violence and abuse.
We consider it particularly important to educate young people, who have a chance to receive information as part of the prevention, even before they could experience various forms of violence regarding relationships. We provide information to students in a comprehensive, intelligible, and practical manner so that they or someone around them can use it immediately in an encounter.
